Free Crochet Pattern - Mini Santa Hat

Santa Hats

Welcome!
I hope you will enjoy the creation of this little Santa hat! Please don't hesitate to contact me with any questions that you may have along the way. Happy crocheting!

Materials You Will Need:
    • Crochet hook size: 3.75mm and 5mm
    • #4/medium weight yarn: red, white
    • Plush yarn (#6 or #7): white (I used jumbo weight Sweet Snuggles yarn by Loops & Threads)
    • Yarn needle
    • Pom pom maker
    • White sewing thread and a sewing needle for securing the yarn ends

This pattern is easy to adjust to the size you want! For the 2 hats pictured on the main page, the final measurements are:

Smaller hat: 3.25 in (8.25 cm) diameter, 3.25 in (8.25 cm) tall
Larger hat: 4.25 in (10.75 cm) diameter, 4 in (10 cm) tall

Abbreviations:
ch(s) – chain(s)
sc – single crochet
sts – stitches
sl st – slip stitch

Note #1: This pattern is crocheted in continuous rounds (you will not join each round).

Note #2: In my patterns, I begin each circle with “ch 2, 6 sc in first ch.” Another way of beginning is to start with a magic circle. If you are more familiar with this method, just do 6 sc into your magic circle.

Hat
Note: You can make your Santa hat as big or small as you want! Just stop at the round where you like the size of the hat, keeping in mind that the final round is made with jumbo white yarn which will increase the size slightly. I will note the rounds where I stopped for the 2 hats pictured on the main page of the pattern.

With red yarn,
R1: Ch 2, 6 sc in first ch. (6 sts)
R2: Sc 6. (6 sts)
R3: (Sc 1, 2 sc in next st), 3 times. (9 sts)
R4: Sc 9. (9 sts)
R5: (Sc 2, 2 sc in next st), 3 times. (12 sts)
R6: Sc 12. (12 sts)
R7: (Sc 3, 2 sc in next st), 3 times. (15 sts)
R8: Sc 15. (15 sts)
R9: (Sc 4, 2 sc in next st), 3 times. (18 sts)
R10: Sc 18. (18 sts)
R11: (Sc 5, 2 sc in next st), 3 times. (21 sts)
R12: Sc 21. (21 sts)

R14: Sc 24. (24 sts)
R15: (Sc 7, 2 sc in next st), 3 times. (27 sts)
R16: Sc 27. (27 sts)
R17: (Sc 8, 2 sc in next st), 3 times. (30 sts)
R18: Sc 30. (30 sts)

This is where I stopped for the smaller hat. If you’d like your hat to be bigger, continue as follows.
R19: (Sc 9, 2 sc in next st), 3 times. (33 sts)
R20: Sc 33. (33 sts)
R21: (Sc 10, 2 sc in next st), 3 times. (36 sts)
R22: Sc 36. (36 sts)
R23: (Sc 11, 2 sc in next st), 3 times. (39 sts)
R24: Sc 39. (39 sts)
R25: (Sc 12, 2 sc in next st), 3 times. (42 sts)
R26: Sc 42. (42 sts)
R27: (Sc 13, 2 sc in next st), 3 times. (45 sts)
R28: Sc 45. (45 sts)

Fasten off, leaving a yarn tail for sewing. Now fold over the top of the hat to see where you want it to lay. Then weave the red yarn tail through the inside of the hat until you are about 3/4 up the hat; bring the yarn out and grab a stitch of the folded-over section of the hat, as pictured below. Do 2-3 stitches to secure the folded section. Secure with a knot and weave the yarn tail through to the upper folded section, where it will be hidden.

Hat Stitch

Now attach your plush/jumbo white yarn where you fastened off the red of the hat. Single crochet around (however many sts you ended your last round with).

Join with a sl st to the first st of the round. Then fasten off, leaving a short yarn tail for weaving in.

Weave the 2 white yarn tails through a few sts of the white, trim the ends, and then stitch the ends down with a sewing needle and white sewing thread.

Now, using the medium weight white yarn, use your pom pom maker to make a fluffy white pom pom for the top of the hat! Sew the pom pom securely to the very top of the hat.

And there you go, you are done! Thank you so much for joining me in making a little Santa hat! Enjoy!
