Free Crochet Pattern - Baby Manatee

Welcome!
I hope you will enjoy the creation of this baby manatee! Please don't hesitate to contact me at hello@theresascrochetshop.com with any questions that you may have as you make it. Have fun!

Materials You Will Need:

  • Crochet hook size: G/4mm
  • Worsted weight yarn: gray
  • Yarn needle
  • One pair of 7 mm safety eyes
  • Polyester fiber fill stuffing

Final measurement for the finished mini manatee will be 4.5 inches (12 cm) long and 2 inches (5 cm) tall.

Abbreviations:
ch – chain
sc – single crochet
sts – stitches
dec – sc decrease st*

*Single crochet decrease stitch explanation: Insert the hook into the next stitch and yarn over. Pull a loop through so that there are now 2 loops on the hook. Insert the hook into the next stitch and yarn over. Pull a loop through so that there are now 3 loops on the hook. Yarn over again and pull the loop of yarn through all 3 loops on the hook.

Note #1: This pattern is crocheted in continuous rows (you will not join each row).

Note #2: In my patterns, I begin each circle with “ch 2, 6 sc in first ch.” Another way of beginning is to start with a magic circle. If you are more familiar with this method, just do 6 sc into your magic circle.

Baby Manatee's Body
R1: Ch 2, 6 sc in first ch (6 sts)
R2: Sc 2 in each st around (12 sts)
R3: (Sc 1, 2 sc in next st), 6 times (18 sts)
R4: Sc 18 (18 sts)
R5: (Sc 2, 2 sc in next st), 6 times (24 sts)
R6-9: Sc 24 (24 sts x 4 rounds)

Now, insert your 7mm safety eyes between R3 and R4 of the body, about 6 sts apart across the top, as pictured below. Firmly press the washers onto the backs of the eyes.

Continue on with the body...

R10: (Sc 6, dec 1), 3 times (21 sts)
R11: Sc 21 (21 sts)
R12: (Sc 5, dec 1), 3 times (18 sts)
R13: Sc 18 (18 sts)
Begin stuffing the body.
R14: (Sc 4, dec 1), 3 times (15 sts)
R15: (Sc 3, dec 1), 3 times (12 sts)
R16: (Dec 1), 6 times (6 sts)

Fasten off, leaving a yarn tail for sewing. Add a little more stuffing as needed. Use the yarn tail to weave through the front loops of the 6 sts and pull tight to close the hole. Secure with a knot and stuff the end inside the body. Your baby manatee’s body should now look as pictured below.

Snout
R1: Ch 2, 6 sc in first ch (6 sts)
R2: Sc 2 in each st around (12 sts)
R3-5: Sc 12 (12 sts x 3 rounds)

Sew the snout to the baby manatee's body between the eyes. Right before you finish sewing it on, stuff the snout with a little stuffing.

Flippers (x2)
R1: Ch 2, 4 sc in first ch (4 sts)
R2: (Sc 1, 2 sc in next st), 2 times (6 sts)
R3-4: Sc 6 (6 sts x 2 rounds)

Fasten off, leaving a yarn tail for sewing. Count 2 rows back from the eyes and sew the flippers to the sides of the baby manatee’s body.

Tail
R1: Ch 2, 6 sc in first ch (6 sts)
R2: Sc 2 in each st around (12 sts)
R3-4: Sc 12 (12 sts x 2 rounds)
R5: (Sc 2, dec 1), 3 times (9 sts)

Fasten off, leaving a yarn tail for sewing. Sew the tail to the back of the baby manatee's body, over top of the small opening at the back of the body.

And now you are finished - thank you so much for joining me in making a mini manatee! Enjoy!
